The reconstructed taillight

Vallier described physical fits connecting recovered plastic to the damaged taillight.

What the record shows

She assembled larger pieces and compared their broken edges with the taillight assembly. The reconstruction retained a gap. She also examined debris that had already been removed from O'Keefe's clothing.

The accompanying photographs are labeled exhibits from the 2024 first-trial collection, shown as visual context alongside the 2025 testimony summarized here. We include both the assembled lens sections and the open region. The smaller clear component is also shown with its scale; these photographs do not independently establish earlier recovery or custody.

Limits and disputed context

The reported physical fits of larger pieces do not establish that the microscopic clothing debris mechanically matched the taillight. The reconstruction retained a gap. The reporting places receipt of the clothing at the lab on March 14, 2022; Vallier could not account for its storage before then. A laboratory comparison does not establish the earlier chain of custody.

OUR INTERPRETATION / THE READ RECORD

Why a physical fit matters to us

Our interpretation of the laboratory comparison, separate from recovery and custody.

Why we give this weight

Pieces that fit along their broken edges tell us more than pieces that merely share a color. Vallier's description of that fit is an important reason we connect the larger recovered fragments to the Lexus.

The material challenge

The reconstruction retained an unfilled gap. Laboratory comparisons also do not establish every event in the material's earlier handling.

Our response

There are two questions here: did the pieces come from this taillight, and how did they reach the place where they were found? The laboratory comparison helps with the first. We still need the recovery and handling evidence to assess the second.

What we are not claiming

A laboratory fit cannot tell us when a piece broke off or when it reached the place where it was found.
